'Third-party tested' is one of the most abused claims in the supplement industry. Many brands use the phrase to refer to in-house testing, summary COAs that cover multiple products, or documents that show only pass/fail results rather than actual values.
We define it strictly: a public COA from a named, independent laboratory with actual numerical results for at least the four primary heavy metals — lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. The products on this list meet that bar. Several go further, with microbial panels and batch codes that tie the report to the product sold.
What labs are used to test shilajit in this database?
The named independent laboratories most commonly appearing on public shilajit COAs in our database include Eurofins, Certified Laboratories, and Anresco Laboratories — all ISO 17025-accredited. A lab being named and accredited is what separates a verifiable claim from an unverifiable one; in-house or unnamed 'third-party' labs don't count toward this list.
What's the difference between qualitative and quantitative heavy metal testing?
Qualitative testing only reports whether a substance is present above or below a threshold — a pass/fail result. Quantitative testing reports the actual measured concentration, in ppm or mg/kg. We require quantitative results for the four primary heavy metals — lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium — because a pass/fail result can't be checked against different safety standards or compared across products.
